Buying a bouquet of flowers is like choosing clothes from a departmental store where there are so many selections available for you.

But did you know:

The style of the wrapping is not an official name for the wrapping style. If so, then why name it that way? It is because the style of wrapping is so widely adopted in a specific country, that people named that style based on the country it originated from.

What styles are well-known and used?

The well-known styles are Hong Kong Style, Korean Style, European Style and more to come; It depends on the majority demands from a certain place.

How do they differentiate from each other?

It may differ from:

  • The pattern of the flower arrangement
  • Quantity of the paper used to structure the wrapping

Example :

  1. Hong Kong Style bouquet has individual flowers wrapped in papers. Besides, the whole bouquet wrapping extends widely to the left and right.
  2. Korean Style feature collar-like designs that either fold in or out.
  3. Japanese style bouquet uses many miniature flowers to compose a bouquet
  4. European and USA bouquet use minimum wrapping papers as the wrappers are just to protect the flowers before they are taken off and put into their vases

Have you noticed a specific bouquet of flowers that has small white flowers with a yellow disk in the middle popping up on your Facebook or Instagram feeds lately? In fact, those are chamomile flowers and here are some facts you may not know about it.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita L. Rauschert), is a species of flowering plant that possess medicinal properties and has herbaceous fragrance. Albeit its characteristics, the plant belongs to the daisy (Asteraceae) family. Pliny the Elder (Gaius Plinius Secundus), a Greek author, mentions that the chamomile bears an apple-like scent, hence the name Chamomile is formed which is derived from two Greek words: Khamai meaning “on the ground” and melon meaning “apple”.

Unlike the other herbaceous plants, chamomile grows in the form of small shrubs that usually reach between 8 to 12 inches in height. In addition, the German chamomile species only grows to the height of 3 feet. Coincidentally, it is the same flower that is use to make chamomile tea which help soothes menstrual cramps, stomach aches and helps improve sleep.

Despite its popularity in tea production and floristry, chamomile only blooms from June to July, rendering it a seasonal flower. People often mistaken it as “daisies” or “mini daisies”, so when you want to purchase it from your local florist, remember that it is chamomile flowers so you do not buy the wrong flowers. You can get it as a bouquet on itself or as filler with other flowers.

With Holland being its only rival, Colombia is the world’s second-largest exporter of wildflowers for over 60 years. Most of its production is grown in the central north-western department of Antioquia. La Feria de las Flores or Festival of Flowers is celebrated annually in the city of Medellin, Colombia.

In May 1957, while the floral industry was starting to flourish, Arturo Uribe, a Medellin’s tourist bureau member suggested that to celebrate the success of the floral industry, they should host a “Fiesta de Flores” or Flower Party.

While the celebration consists of flower expositions in the Basilica Metropolitana Cathedral, local music performance and the Desfile de Silleteros in the previous years, the event now consists of massive concerts by well-known artists, classical car parades, art exhibitions, culinary classes and horse fairs.

Not only that, the celebration can last up to ten days, with each day filled with different events such as orchid expos, local music concerts, beauty pageants and firework displays. Some events that you should check out while there are the Trova competition (where two people battle each other with an improv singing session), the famous Metro Concierto de Conciertos, and the Chiva parade that celebrates Colombia’s colourful open-side buses.

On the last day, Desfile de Silleteros is the final act that will be mark the end of the ten day Flower Festival celebration. The word Silletero derives from “Silla” (“chair” in Spanish), and it is used to call the people who used wooden chairs to transport goods and even people on their backs from one place to another. This also applied to the flower vendors as they too carried huge amounts of flowers into the city of Medellin on their backs. During this event, silleteros or flower farmers will parade through the streets of Medellin with gigantic, intricate flower arrangements on their backs for the chance to be crowned with the most beautiful flower arrangement.

Flower farmer with his arrangement

While the Covid-19 pandemic has the struck the globe, crippling the world economy as well as several industries, this has not stopped La Feria de las Flores 2020. Although the Mayor of Medellin, Daniel Quintero Calle mentions that the celebration for this year will be different from the previous years, it will not be stopped as there is sufficient time to prepare the necessaries for the celebration. It is scheduled between 31st July 2020 to 8th August 2020.
