时值年底，在这辞旧迎新之际，人们纷纷开始利用空闲时间打扫卫生、清扫院落，只为图个新年、新气象！而且俗话说得好，“行过花街，才叫过年”，添置一些春联、福字、年宵花等也是传统习俗之一，只为图个锦上添花，为春节增添一些喜庆祥和的节日气氛！

虽然年宵花品种繁多，但是打理简单而且寓意美好的干枝切花也一直占有一席之地。比如：经典老品种干枝银柳、新进网红干枝雪柳、干枝切花“爱马仕”北美冬青等一直是花友们的心怡之选，随意挑选几枝搭配一个素雅的粗陶或玻璃花瓶，就很喜庆！

【1】挑选银柳，应避开“五颜六色”：

原生态的银柳，以银灰色为主，所以市面上五颜六色的银柳基本都是后期人工加工的工艺品。虽然看起来绚丽夺目，但是对人体是否有害却不得而知，所以如果遇到枝条抓在手里手心的皮肤会染色、闻起来有刺鼻气味、枝条上的绒球遇水即褪色的彩色银柳，大家还是谨慎购买比较好。选择这样的银柳，还不如普通盆栽来得实在！

【2】实在喜欢，入手几枝红色作为点缀即可：

不可否认，市面上的许多银柳虽为染色工艺品，但是仍然无法阻挡大家对它的喜爱。如果实在喜欢，入手几枝红色稍加装饰和点缀即可，因为相比于五颜六色，红色起码寓意“吉利红”、“中国红”，更符合大众的审美，也更能衬托节日氛围，而且建议大家将其摆放于通风良好的环境下，仅仅用于节日期间短时间观赏比较好。

【3】回归初心，不要过于迷信和玄学：

大家选择年宵花的初心，无非图个好彩头，同时美化环境、愉悦心情，所以没有必要过于在意银柳到底插几枝比较吉利？或者摆在什么方位更加招财？那样就太纠结了！按照个人喜好，随意用一些利是、福字、中国结之类的装饰一下，摆放在家里明亮的窗台或桌面即可。

俗话说得好，“过了腊八，就是年”！年关将至，年味渐浓，虽然民间一直有“过年插银柳，好日子越过越有”的讲法，但是大家在挑选银柳时，还是得长点心，别让你的无心之选，反而看起来没品位！

Container Pots

When choosing a plant, one must also choose the pot. There are different types of pots and by determining the plant’s water requirement and size, you can choose the most suitable pot for your plants to thrive. Ideally, terra cotta pots are the best choice but they are breakable and a bit pricey whereas plastic pots are light and inexpensive but may become brittle with time and changing weather conditions. In addition, choose pots which come with drainage holes. Drainage holes let excess water to flow out and prevent root rot and mold growth.

Soil

Soil plays an important role in planting as it acts as a medium for plants to form roots and hold themselves upright, as well as providing water retainment and nutrients. Majority of the houseplants are suitable to be planted in store bought potting soil, however air plants require no soil whereas succulents require gritty soil.

Sunlight

Sunlight is the ultimate source for plants to carry out photosynthesis. There are 4 components of sunlight conditions which are bright light, low light, direct and indirect light. Giving too much sunlight than what the plants needed will result in scorched leaves forming whereas too little sunlight will stagger the plants’ growth rate. As an example, dracaena, monstera and philodendrons can tolerate bright, indirect sunlight.

Water & Humidity

Water is essential for plants to carry out photosynthesis and helps roots absorb nutrients from the soil. However, insufficient water may cause the plants to wilt whereas overwater causes rotting. It is crucial to know how much water your plant needs, as a general rule of thumb, ensure the soil of the plant is moist but not soggy.

Strelitzia Reginae

Widely called as “Bird of Paradise”, it is a native flower to South Africa. It can grow up to 1.2 m high with broad long oval shaped leaves. Its flowers have three orange outer tepals and three blue inner tepals; two inner tepals are joined together resembling arrowhead shape.

Alpinia Purpurata

Also known as Red Ginger, these flowers are averagely 15 cm to 30 cm with overlapping red bracts, forming a cone or funnel shape. Its leaves are oblong and measures up to 80 cm long and 20 cm wide.

Water

The simplest way to prolong and to keep flowers moisture.

Flower Food

Contains sugar which is the flowers’ food source, acidifier which lowers the pH level of the water, bleach that helps disinfect the water and stem unplugger that prevents stem from closing.

Aspirin or Panadol

It is said to lower the pH levels of the water, making it more habitable for the flowers and therefore prolonging the flowers.

vodka

Some said vodka reduces the flowers’ production of ethylene, which helps them mature and causes them to wilt and die. Vodka can also function as bleach in flower food does by eliminating the bacteria in the water. 

Sexual Performance Enhancer

It is said to contain nitric oxide, which can slow down the aging process of plants and flowers and thus, help them to live longer.

The Results

The flowers with the FLOWER FOOD were still standing straight with their petals still silky and hydrated.

The flowers in WATER and VODKA slumped over. However, the flowers soaked in VODKA is silkier compared to the rest of the flowers.

The the flowers that soaked in that ASPIRIN slumped and the stems had turned dark, indicating rotting stems.

The flowers of the SEXUAL PERFORMANCE ENHANCER has the worst result with its flowers slumped and dried out compared to the others.
